People are always quick to complain about their contractors, to the point that you start to hate them before you even get the opportunity to work with them.
But, if we're very honest, most contractors are actually nice people that are honest, understanding, and more than just competent of getting the job done.
Did anyone ever think that contractors have their own opinions about their clients?
Well, they do. And here are some things that your decent contractor won’t ever tell you:
Okay, so you’re all set, you hired a contractor to renovate your kitchen or your bathroom, and s/he’s ready to start working. You come out of the blue and say something like, “Oh, my friend is a plumber, and I want you to use him.”
I am a facilitator of a group of subs (subcontractors). I know my people, I have my go-to people that I can rely on, and I know they’ll get the job done right. I really don’t want to work with someone I don’t know and have never worked with because things could fizzle out, get out of control, and most importantly you won’t be happy with the result!
You’re set on revamping your old kitchen cabinets because you love them really and you think it’ll save you a little money. You ask your contractor to refurbish them.
The problem with reusing old cabinets is that they may be holding now, but once I take them apart, they could fall apart. Nothing that has been installed previously is easy to work with once it’s been taken apart. To top it all off, you’ll have to spend more because I’ll have to find someone good to do it all up.
You think as a client that you’re more important to your contractor than their people and their marketing strategies because you have the all powerful “word-of-mouth!”
This is only half the truth. I’ve known my people for years, and we have a great business relationship. I will try to smooth everything over to keep things going, and if that doesn’t work, I may consider removing this person from the project, just to get the job done without the headache of your complaining. But, this guy will always be more important than your one-time project.
As all homeowners do, you’re probably thinking that your contractor is giving you a lower price to keep her/his business running, and will add things up throughout the remodel to get more money out of you.
I don’t want more work; I want to get your remodeling done in the timeframe I have promised you. I don’t want you to pay more for this because it already costs you a fair bit. But, if something does come up, I do wish you would be understanding and see that I’m not the bad guy. I would more than love to keep working off of our checklist because it’s easier than adding things on while the project is ongoing!
We read this everywhere, interview your contractor, shop around, look around, and when you’re comfortable with one, stick with the person. But, then you go and tell your contractor that you settled for them because you think that’ll work to your advantage.
Well, good. You’ve shopped around, you’ve seen other people, and you know I’m the best person for the job. This means things should run smoothly because there won’t be any second-guessing once we get this ball rolling.
We have a horrible habit of bargaining and haggling with our contractors because we see their fees as too high!
Look, my fees aren’t negotiable, and I’m on your team. I can help you save money because I know people who can get you good deals on materials and more. Just please trust me when I say I am not your enemy but your ally!
You probably think that you're a pain to your contractor because you're very exact and clear with what you want. To top it off, you’re on top of her/his work because you want to know it’s being done right and the way you want.
I like that you’re on the ball and you’re working with me rather than working against me; waiting for me to mess up so you can take me to court. If this is how you want it done, this is how it will be done, because it is your home and not mine!
You think that going into the kitchen to get a cup of water isn’t distracting for the team working on your home. You also think it’s your home so you can and will roam around as freely as you like.
I will not tell you to leave your own home, but I wish you would. It’s not for my team, even though I think they’ll work better without you here. But, it’s because of safety, and there really isn’t enough space in here for all of us.
See, contractors are humans that want the job done right, without upsetting you, but they are afraid of upsetting you, so they just don’t tell you what they’re thinking. When you want to remodel, ask your contractor to be open with you and honest if they think you’re holding back the project in any way, shape, or form, they’ll definitely respect you a lot more!
